What does a Mitsubishi Ductless Mini-Split System Cost?

Here in Florida, a ductless heating and cooling system in a single-zone configuration starts at $3,500 - fully installed, and ready to turn on. The price goes up from there, depending on a variety of factors.

Buyer Beware

Some websites advertise ductless mini-split systems as low as $1,867 and $159 to have it professionally installed. As you can probably imagine, that price is for the cheapest, least efficient unit on the market, but no reputable contractor would charge that little for labor so proceed with caution.

Ductless Mini-Splits are Whisper-Quiet

By now, you may already know that ductless systems are a quiet, efficient heating and cooling solution that will, in some cases, pay for themselves in energy savings, but what can a homeowner expect to pay for this modern convenience in the Broward, Palm Beach and Deerfield Beach area?

Ductless mini-split technology has actually been around for more than 50 years, but it’s only been available to Florida homeowners for the past 30 years or so. In fact, ductless systems account for 90% of all HVAC systems sold in Japan and 80% of all systems in Europe. Lack of familiarity with the technology and limited access to information has slowed the adoption of ductless in the United States, but its efficiency has caused major utility companies, government agencies, and homeowners to take notice.

The financial incentives associated with ductless technology have made it one of the fastest-growing home comfort solutions for residential heat pump and air conditioning replacements.

The Bottom Line

So how much can you expect to pay to have a Mitsubishi ductless system installed in your home?

The answer, of course, is - it depends…

The price of a ductless system is determined by four main factors:

  • The size of the unit.
  • The type of unit.
  • The number of areas (or zones) being conditioned.
  • The degree of difficulty of the installation (e.g. how far the indoor and outdoor units are from each other, the construction of the outer wall to be drilled to carry the line sets, etc.)

Due to the flexibility of these systems (whole-house, partial-house, one room or area, etc.) there are numerous design possibilities that can slide your job from the lower end of the cost range to the highest.

  • Single-Zone Mitsubishi Ductless Installation:  At its most basic, a ductless system consists of at least one indoor wall unit (evaporator/air handler), at least one outdoor unit (condenser), and line sets to connect everything. Professional installation of a single-zone configuration will cost between $2,800 and $4,500. This layout is ideal for many kinds of applications like conditioning the air in a sunroom, garage, attic, and some smaller homes.
  • Multi-Zone Mitsubishi Ductless Installation:  Other applications are better served by 3, 4 or even 5 units, depending on the layout of the home and the homeowner’s needs. A multi-zone system consisting of 2 indoor evaporator units typically runs between $7,500 and $8,000, while a 5-zone system can cost $18,000 to $22,000.

We can run as many as 5 indoor units with a single outdoor condenser and we can add indoor units at a later date if you want to have your system designed for future expansion as your budget permits.

Is ductless a good value for my money?

The upfront cost of ductless heating and air conditioning can seem steep, but the energy efficiency pays off in the long run. Since there are no ducts, you don't waste energy through leaky ductwork.

Typical forced air systems experience duct losses equivalent to about 20% of the system's energy consumption and, often, it's over 30%.

Ductless systems are also less expensive to maintain than traditional systems.

When you add in attractive rebate programs and 0% payment plans, ductless solutions offer a net cost savings to most homeowners.

Multi-zone configurations come with an additional energy-saving benefit as you can control the temperature independently in each room where an air handler is installed so you don't have to heat or cool areas of the house that are not in use.
