Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)

We’re so used to conventional central air conditioning systems, we don’t even wonder if there’s a better way to heat and cool our homes and businesses - a less expensive way, one without all the hot and cold spots or the draftiness. Well, we’re here to tell you - there is a better way!

Unlike traditional HVAC systems, VRF systems divide buildings into customizable zones. Heating and cooling is provided by cycling refrigerant between an outdoor unit and each zone’s ductless or ducted indoor unit so the temperature set point for each zone is reached using the least amount of energy.

The amount of ductwork in ducted configurations is minimized because units are within or near the zone they condition, making even ducted VRF systems more efficient than traditional ducted systems. In comparison, centralized systems rely on a single air handler to condition an entire building. This setup forces air through long, frequently leaky, ducts which means that rooms that are far from the air handler receive less conditioned air than closer rooms - making thermostat battles inevitable.

Conventional HVAC systems rely on energy-intensive on/off cycles. The system runs until the set point is reached, then shuts off. Within a short time, the temperature drifts, causing the system to rev up the compressor and start the cycle again. Variable Refrigerant Flow systems are inverter driven so they run more consistently, keeping the temperatures in each zone steady.

In addition to being more cost effective, this method allows people in different zones to enjoy customized set points. It’s also helpful in situations with specific heating and cooling needs like a Florida Room or a server room.

From a one-room addition to a 100-room hotel with varying occupancy levels, Variant Refrigerant Flow technology is a game changer when it comes to cost savings and comfort.
